The History

The Ship Society is an old organisation; it first started in early 1900’s when the students from the Marine society created a supporting society for new and old Naval architects. After the founding of the organisation at KTH, the society has been dormant and returned several times, for a few years the entire Naval architect education program was cancelled. Despite this, the Ship Society managed to survive and is going strong today.

The Organisation today works with three main objectives: to create a good working environment within the students currently at the Naval architect department, to improve and develop the program and to facilitate good relations between the education and the marine industry.

To achieve this, the Ship Society works actively with organizing teambuilding events, guest lectures, company visits and other forms of social events. The two largest events during the year is the Marine technology days (MTD) and the congress for Shipbuilders in the Nordic countries (NTHS)

Marine technology days (MTD) is arranged by both the Ship Society and the department of Naval architecture at KTH every year and is a two days social event were master thesis’s works and projects from students are presented and companies within the marine industry has the chance to present themselves to the students and talk about their craft and mingle.

NTHS is a big Scandinavian congress were marine technology students from all over Scandinavia sends a delegation to meet once a year in one of the four host countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark) to share knowledge and to visit companies that are connected the marine industry for the host nation at that time. The congress lasts one week and is a great opportunity to expand the network of marine technology students in Scandinavia.
